Power Integrations' TOPSwitch-HX Offers Best-In-Class Efficiency Across Entire Load Range

San Jose, CA - Power Integrations, the leader in high-voltage analog integrated circuits for power conversion, recently announced the TOPSwitch-HX family of AC-DC power conversion ICs. Power Integrations introduced its original TOPSwitch product in 1994, combining a 700 V switching power MOSFET with controller and supervisory functions into a single monolithic IC. The TOPSwitch-HX family of ICs utilizes Power Integrations' EcoSmart energy-efficiency technology and combines great standby power performance with constant, high efficiency under all load conditions, enabling best-in-class efficiency over the entire load range.

TOPSwitch-HX enables power supply designs that easily meet proposed and existing energy standards such as CEC and ENERGY STAR, while delivering up to 48 W without the need for heat-sinking (and up to 150 W with a heat sink). A new multi-mode control scheme provides highly efficient operation across the entire load range, eliminating the need for a separate standby power supply in some applications. The control algorithm seamlessly transitions between different operating modes to optimize energy efficiency at all power levels, with the capability to deliver more than 600 mW output for 1-watt input and a no-load power consumption of less than 200 mW. Also, a unique power coefficient (I2f) parameter greatly improves the output power limit accuracy and allows the designer to optimize the design of power-related components to further reduce system cost.

"With the introduction of TOPSwitch–HX, we have again improved upon the key strengths of our flagship product," said Doug Bailey, vice president of marketing, Power Integrations. "With the best overall efficiency of any PWM flyback controller IC, TOPSwitch-HX performs excellently across the entire load range, eliminating the need for a separate standby power supply to meet 1-watt and other energy efficiency regulations."

The TOPSwitch–HX family of ICs offers a wide range of protection features, including: user-programmable latching or non-latching output overvoltage shutdown OVP; line under-voltage (UV) detection to prevent turn-off glitches; line over-voltage (OV) shutdown, which extends the line surge limit; accurate, programmable current limits; optimized feed-forward for line ripple rejection; and an auto-restart function that delivers less than three percent of rated power in short-circuit conditions.

Major applications for the new TOPSwitch–HX include LCD monitors, high power adaptors and chargers, high-efficiency PC standby, Set Top Boxes (STBs), printers as well as for consumer and industrial applications. Complete documentation for the TOPSwitch-HX family can be found on the Power Integrations web site at www.powerint.com. The new product family is also supported by a reference design kit (RDK-142).
