Bavarian State Government Pledges Support For Onyx Power To Build An H2 Ready Gas Turbine Power Plant

Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, visited the Zolling site. The occasion for his visit was the signing of a joint Letter of Intent (LoI) between the Bavarian Ministry and Onyx Power for the construction of a modern H2 ready gas turbine power plant at the Zolling Energy Park.

The planned power plant is to be built under the Electricity Supply Security and Capacity Act and will make a key contribution to the stability of Bavaria’s energy system in the future. Especially during periods of low feed-in from renewable energy sources, the plant is intended to cover peak loads and reliably support the electricity supply in southern Bavaria.

Minister of State Hubert Aiwanger stated: “We need new gas-fired power plants to ensure a secure and affordable energy supply for Bavaria. Due to the phase-out of nuclear energy and the reduction of coal-fired power generation, gas-fired power plants are becoming increasingly important, especially in southern Germany. Zolling is a long-established energy hub, and the planned power plant is intended to strengthen its relevance beyond 2031. Bavaria explicitly supports this project, as it significantly in-creases regional security of supply.”

Roman Ritter, Power Plant Manager in Zolling, said: “We would like to sincerely thank Minister of State Aiwanger for his support of our project and the close dialogue regarding the future of the Zolling En-ergy Park. The planned gas turbine power plant is a key future project for our site, the region, and security of supply in Germany. Modern, flexible power plants will play a decisive role in the success of the energy transition in the future. In order for us to realize this project, we now need reliable legal frameworks and functioning tender mechanisms.”

The signing of the Letter of Intent marks an important milestone. Onyx Power will continue to advance plans for the hydrogen-capable combined cycle power plant and is in close contact with policymakers to this end. The goal is to make a sustainable contribution to a secure energy supply and the successful implementation of the energy transition in Bavaria.
