City Of Santa Clara Approves Clean Hydropower Agreement

The Santa Clara City Council unanimously approved a 30-year extension agreement of a federally-owned hydropower project with the United States Department of Energy’s power market administrator, Western Area Power Administration.

The City of Santa Clara’s municipally owned electric utility, Silicon Valley Power, has been purchasing power from Western Area Power Administration since 1967.

The current contract which began in 2005 was scheduled to expire on December 31, 2024. This contract, which accounts for approximately 10% of City’s electrical needs during an average hydro year, will allow SVP to continue to providing clean cost-effective hydropower to its residents and businesses through December 31, 2054.
