Hydro Ottawa Reaches Milestone Of Training 100,000 Ottawa Elementary School Students In Electricity Safety And Conservation

Ottawa, Ontario - (Marketwire) - Hydro Ottawa celebrates a major milestone today in training 100,000 Ottawa-area elementary students through its Electricity Safety and Conservation Program. Ontario's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, the Honourable Brad Duguid, joined Hydro Ottawa President and CEO Rosemarie Leclair, Connaught School Principal Irene Cameron, and 290 students and teachers as they marked this moment for the program.

"We are very proud to have reached more than 100,000 students in Ottawa through this program," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hydro Ottawa. "It is an informative and engaging way to educate young children about electrical safety and energy conservation. Injuries due to electricity are often life-altering and sometimes fatal. As a company with a long-standing commitment to safety, we want to help ensure that no child in Ottawa is injured because they are unaware of the dangers of electricity."

Since 2005, more than 700 presentations in 190 elementary schools across the Ottawa community have been delivered. The program, which is available in English and French, is provided free-of-charge to students from kindergarten to grade eight. In addition to helping young students learn how to stay safe around electrical equipment, it also provides helpful tips about how to save electricity.

"Young Ontarians are showing us how easy it is to make energy conservation a habit. They understand how the small things we do every day to conserve energy can have a big impact on protecting our environment," said Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Brad Duguid. "By building a culture of conservation, we are helping Ontario become cleaner, stronger and even more prosperous for the next generation."

Hydro Ottawa is one of about 80 electrical utilities who have been working with schools across the province to help increase elementary students awareness about both energy conservation and safety.

"I know our students really enjoy learning about electricity and they talk about the lessons they've learned afterwards with their friends and families at home too. That's why we're so pleased to be the host of this celebration. It's clear that Hydro Ottawa's Electricity Conservation and Safety Program provides children with important knowledge that lasts a lifetime," said Irene Cameron, Principal at Connaught Public School.
