The new OptiView laptop-sized network analyzer is designed to bring out the best in IT staffers charged with enterprise maintenance and troubleshooting. Wrapped in a comfortable interface and sporting an ample color display, the analyzer has models capable of testing 10/100BASE-T, 100BASE-FX and 1000BASE-FX networks with full seven-layer analysis.

Its boot sequence shows that the hardware heart of the analyzer is a fully functional Microsoft Windows 98 PC complete with external mouse and keyboard ports, two USB ports, a PC Card slot, and the usual raft of applications, including Microsoft Internet Explorer. Because the unit, which weighs 6.2 lb. with battery, is not meant to be treated as a laptop per se, these PC qualities are a bonus. The included MIB library and browser are easily updated. Other features include a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server program and a virtual keyboard for data entry.

A well-designed touchscreen "front page" is the gateway to all the unit has to offer. The page clearly displays information, including an IP address (the OptiView will find an IP address even when DHCP is not available) and station wiring. Connected switch and port information is displayed, for example, as switch name "ABC, Port 5." The speed and duplex of the connection also are shown. Graphical summaries of discovered devices, problems and protocols provide touchpad links to detailed breakdowns of each. Also on the front page are utilization statistics for the network segment to which the analyzer is connected, as well as several program control buttons.

The OptiView is offered in three versions. Beyond the base unit, the OptiView Pro adds a 100BASE-FX interface, RMON2, application filters and protocol capture, and the OptiView Pro Gigabit model includes the Gigabit Interface Controller.
